Introductory
Remarks by Bill Rutherford
Last year many
wonderful people woke to a beautiful September morning.
In parting from one another they
may have said something like:
"See you after work."
"I'll call as soon as I can."
"I love you."
Each was a simple
expression of love and expectation of a safe return home.
Today we gather to confirm the love they shared
is without end, to express gratitude for all who help and protect
others, and to remember how much we mean to one another whether near or
far.
Like those who suffered
so much on September 11th, each of you is vital to the lives of many
others. To mothers and fathers, husbands and wives, sisters and
brothers, grandparents and friends the world is a far better place
because of you. In honor of those for whom we gather today, please take
a moment to greet someone standing nearby. Someone you may not know-but
who you know means the world to someone.
About the Memorial
The 'slide pole' anchored behind the tree
was salvaged from the original Fire Station #1. For many years
life-saving firefighters used it as they rushed to our aid. Placement in
the memorial has allowed it to return home.
The cast-iron hand atop the pole represents the strength and courage of
the police officers, firefighters, military troops, medical personnel
and citizens who reach out to serve and save us where most fear to go.
A copper 'Ring of Remembrance' encircles the tree. Through the darkest
of night, soft points of light are seen glowing from within the ring. As
years pass, branches will appear to embrace the ring as its copper hue
gradually becomes tree-like in color. Remaining constant will be the
ring's symbolism of our 'UNBROKEN, UNDIMINSHED AND EVERLASTING' memory
of 9-11's loved-ones, families and friends.
