The very nature of Salt Lake City’s location between the Wasatch Mountains and the Great Salt Lake brings the mountains,
foothills and valley lowland environments into the urban context enhancing our quality of life. Open space, parks and trails in Salt Lake City provide
exceptional outdoor opportunities to recreate, connect with
nature and building community, while supporting
a healthy environment.
The mission of the Salt Lake City Open Space Lands Program is to preserve and enhance the quality of life throughout Salt Lake City. Salt Lake City strives to preserve natural areas, increase access to parks, and enhance trail and open space connectivity. Salt Lake City has created a procedure for granting and leveraging funds for the acquisition of land, conservation easements, development rights, and other means of preserving open space under the Open Space Lands Program. The City’s Open Space Advisory Board reviews and recommends projects to the Mayor and Council for funding.
Open Space Lands eligible for
acquisition are defined by ordinance as a parcel of land in a predominantly open and undeveloped condition that is suitable for 1) natural areas 2) wildlife habitat 3) important wetland or watershed lands 4) greenway or stream corridors 5) small neighborhood parks and community gardens, and 6) trails and paths for non-motorized recreational activities.
