Fisher Mansion

historic photoSalt Lake City purchased the Fisher Mansion in 2007 to acquire the final easement to complete the Jordan River trail. The property includes a Victorian mansion built in 1893 by architect Richard Kletting (designer of the Utah State Capitol), a carriage house, and the grounds. Mayor Ralph Becker recommended the City keep the property and renovate the buildings for community use.

A diverse Partners Team was created including representatives from the neighborhood, historic preservation, sustainable renovation, trails, arts and education communities. Following an extensive outreach process to solicit community suggestions for re-use of the property, the Partners Team will decide the renovation and re-use of the building and grounds that will be most feasible and responsive to community wishes. Two open houses were held in Spring 2008, which generated hundreds of ideas for re-use of the property.

Progress

The mansion and carriage house buildings were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in October 2008. Shortly after his inauguration, Mayor Ralph Becker reactivated the buildings' nomination to the National Register, which was originally submitted in 1983.

We are ready to conduct an Historic Structures Report/conditions assessment of the two buildings and grounds to inform the Partners Team's discussions. The Partners Team, in coordination with SLC Engineering, has developed a solicitation package for consulting support to provide relevant information for future decisions about feasible community re-use of the Fisher Mansion property. The RFQ is available at www.slcpurchasing.com; responses are due before 4:30 PM on 2/23/09.

The Historic Structures Report/conditions assessment will be done at much lower cost thanks to these community contributions:

  • Anonymous Donor -- $10,000 cash contribution which will be used as the cash match for the following grants:
  • National Trust for Historic Preservation -- $4,000 grant
  • George S. and Dolores Doré Eccles Foundation -- $6,000 grant
  • The preliminary Historic Structures Report written by University of Utah professor Bob Young's architecture students; and
  • Seismic structural assessment work being done pro bono by the Structural Engineers Association of Utah, Existing Buildings Committee
