Pioneer Park"It Takes A Neighborhood"... to Build a Neighborhood Park
Located in downtown Salt Lake City, Pioneer Park was re-opened on June 14, 2008, with increased infrastructure to encourage use of the park as a Neighborhood Park. A Partners Team drawn from the immediate neighbors of the park - residents, businesses, homeless community representatives, other property owners, and local police - is working to implement strategies to ensure the park's safety and liveability. The group's first focus was an extensive effort to encourage regular ongoing activities during all hours that the park was open this summer. The group obtained a variety of community commitments for recurring and one-time events, including daily lunch-time activities, morning yoga, a Friday night international movie series, a Sunday international market, and Sunday evening BBQ and bocce. The Mayor's Office sponsored Fitness in the Park one Friday in September, a challenge to other City departments in each of the sports offered in Pioneer Park - basketball, bocce, croquet, tennis, ultimate frisbee and volleyball. Next StepsThe Salt Lake City Council and Salt Lake Solutions co-hosted a public workshop in December to revisit the phases 2 and 3 design plans for Pioneer Park. The invited participants were asked to confirm whether the existing plans still meet the needs of the changing neighborhood, and to prioritize individual design components. The public input will help determine what additional improvements are desirable to make Pioneer Park everyone's neighborhood park. The Partners Team will begin meeting again in spring 2009 to explore options for identifying and sponsoring a wide variety of lawful activities in Pioneer Park at all times of day and throughout the next week summer. Thank You!We appreciate all the community support for our projects. Click here for information about our supporters. Many thanks to the SLC Film Center and the corporate sponsors for five wildly successful movie nights in August 2008. We also appreciate the Downtown Community Council's sponsorship of activities in Pioneer Park -- Yoga in the Park and Sunday night BBQ and bocce. |
